Dermaplaning is a safe (provided the person performing it is properly trained!) and highly effective physical exfoliation procedure. Physical exfoliation means taking the outer, dead layer of skin off without chemicals. It requires the use of a sterile, surgical scalpel to gently remove the top-most layer of dead skin along with fine, vellus hair (peach fuzz). Sounds painful – but thankfully it’s not! This procedure can be performed monthly, usually in less than thirty minutes, and no downtime afterwards. It leaves your skin feeling clean, smooth, and refreshed! The benefits: Physical exfoliation triggers the cell regeneration process which can help with wrinkles and general skin texture. It allows skin products to better penetrate your skin and make-up to glide on smoother. It also gets rid of the fine hairs which can trap dirt and oil. Contrary to the old wives’ tale, peach fuzz will not grow back thicker or darker! Exfoliation of dead cells along with the removal of fine hairs results in healthier, brighter skin that has a smooth look and feel. Who it’s for: Dermaplaning can be for just about anyone – but it is especially effective on those with dry or rough skin texture and helps to minimize acne scarring or uneven skin tone. It is safe for pregnant or lactating individuals who cannot have chemical peels or laser skin procedures performed. Those with active acne should avoid this procedure. Warning - Don't try this at home! It's important to note that dermaplaning uses a specific technique requiring a delicate touch and a skilled approach to resurface skin. Unlike shaving, it is performed freehand with a surgical scalpel (the average razor has two blades which are duller with a “rougher cut” than surgical blades) on tightly stretched skin. The method requires short strokes at a certain angle in particular patterns depending on the area of your face that is being worked on, which is definitely difficult to do in the mirror! It takes training to handle a scalpel properly, so it is very important to visit a licensed, skilled professional. We are well-trained and handle surgical instruments on a daily basis, so you can feel confident that you are getting top-notch care with us. As always, we offer free consultations for your skin care needs. --Jean Gustafson, MD bāre medispa
